0KM activities to do in alajeró - la gomera

Maria Yoga Playa Santiago

Visiting a new place can be pretty exciting, but it also makes you wonder all the incredible things that you would like to do and see. Even though La Gomera is a small island, 2nd smallest from the Canary islands (369,76 km²), the distances between main towns, are big. That’s why we wanted to create the ¨0KM activities” in Alajeró.

As we have mentioned before, Alajeró is a small town with 150 people living in it, but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing to do around here. It doesn’t matter if you are staying for one night or more with us. You can still enjoy!

Some of the activities that we suggest and are 0 KM, are the following:

  • Hiking Routes in Alajeró (free)
  • Yoga and Meditation (free)
  • Plant a Tree, Plántate project (free)
  • Stargazing at the Tagaragunche (Mirador de San Isidro, wronlgy called El Calvario) (free)
  • Yoga with María
  • Gomeran games and activities for kids, with Corinne
  • Egg collecting with Yanira – free range organic chicken
  • Italian Pizza done by Anna (only on Fridays).

As you can see, some of them are free for you to do by yourself or with the person(s) that is (are) traveling with you. The other ones, you can book it directly through us.

Renting car in La Gomera is an option. But we will always try to provide you the MOST ECO option that we have found and love 😉

If you want to learn more about the options that we just told you, keep scrolling!!

Let’s go first with the free options.

Hiking routes in Alajeró.

Alajeró is a town that even though it doesn’t have many services, it has several things to offer.  One of does things are the hiking routes.

The town is connected to the GR132 hiking route, so if you are planning on walking around the island, let us tell you that it is possible!

From the Eco-Apartments you are able to go by foot to different beaches or to different towns closer to the National Park Garajonay.

Feel free to download the Route Map from La Gomera here.

To the beach:
    • Alajeró – Quise – La Cantera (access only by foot)
    • Alajeró – Tejena – Targa – El Repecho – Playa Santiago (hiking route 22); you can go down by foot and return by guagua if you don’t feel like walking back

Yoga and meditation.

If you are you staying with us, you don’t have to worry about not being able to bring your beloved yoga mat with you, because  WE GOT YOUR BACK! We have two yoga mats (until now) available for our beloved guests. Just let us know in advance, and we will make sure to leave it/them in your apartment before your arrival.

Plant a tree.

One of our ecoprojects is related to reforestation of local plants. Soooo, we always have trees and bushes available that need a new and definitive home.

You choose a plant from the different options that we have, we show you the different spots where to transplant it. Then you make the hole, transplant it and at the end, water it!

Just to be 100% clear. You don’t need to be staying with us to help us reforest La Gomera!

Stargazing at the Tagaragunche.

Alajeró has a perfect sky due to low light contamination. So if you are a night sky lover, but not a nerd about it, the next information might be useful.

Every year from Alajeró you are able to see the Perseids. They are always visible from mid August until the end of September. This year the best days to see them will be on the  7th – 9th of August and on the 6th -8th of September (New Moon).

YOGA WITH MARÍA.

It doesn’t matter if you are new, beginner, medium or advanced level in yoga. María is an experts in different types of Yoga(Hatha Yoga, Yoga for kids and family, acro yoga, etc..) a nicest and softest teacher I have ever met. I have some back problems and she has always taken this into account while practicing yoga.

She usually teaches classes weekly in Alajeró with a marvelous group of people from different ages and most of the time it is outdoors, except during the cold days. You can join the classes and give a donation at the end.

With María, we have created some packages of stay + yoga/meditation for 1 or 2 people, and you can choose from a list what would you like to practice and when. It could be morning time to start fresh your day as a sunflower, or around sunset so you can go to bed and rest properly. How does it sound? Tempting, right? I bet!

GOMERAN GAMES AND ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS, WITH CORINNE.
Corinne is our neighbor and she is the master of entertaining kids from La Gomera.
One of the many things that she does every year, is that she is in charge of the daily activities for the kids from Alajeró during each Summer. She specializes in traditional games from La Gomera like bola canaria or making dolls with dried husk (leaves) of corn, and that is what we want to share with you.
Because we totally beleave that when you go somewhere, you should learn the typical thing from that place. Perhaps your kids or even you find a new game or hobby. Who knows?!

EGG COLLECTING WITH YANIRA – FREE-RANGE AND ORGANIC CHICKEN.

Ok. So we have anooother neighbor (10 minutes away from home by foot) that has many hens, some roosters, and chickens. Yanira is an amazing person, that radiates happiness. She literally glows! Wonderful person, mother, partner, and friend. Her land is pretty big with spectacular views from the town and towards El Hierro.

With Yanira we have decided to offer two options. Which are the following:

  • Let’s walk and grab your extremely fresh eggs. Fresher than this, impossible! 6 eggs €2, 12 eggs €4 Grab them yourself and live the experience of our daily activities. Perhaps you and your family will learn new things about this marvelous animal; and if you know more, please don’t hesitate to share it with us! We love to learn new things every day 🙂
  • Not feeling like walking, talking, or anything? No worries! Let us know when you book with us and we will have them ready for your arrival.

Some fun facts: A healthy and happy hen produces 1 egg daily. Imagine!

A chicken has two stomachs the first part is called the gizzard a muscular stomach in which they use small stones to grind down their food before it enters their second stomach.
